Sowing Seeds – לזרוע זרעים
I’ve always loved to hear my music performed and recorded by other cantors and artists and have spent my career mentoring talent. The idea for this CD came from my mentor and friend Allison Druin who suggested I invite a few of my friends, who happen to be some of the best and brightest of the music world, to sing some of my songs. I agreed and Sowing Seeds was born. At the same time, I was collaborating with my long-time friend Mattan Klein, leader of the remarkable Israeli band Seeds of Sun. He had been creating some awesome jazz covers of my music and the two ideas collided into the recording that is before you. I couldn’t have done this project without the talents of all the amazing artists who contributed. Thank you to my friends: Julie Silver, Doug Cotler, Sam Glaser, Todd Herzog, Lori Williams, Hannah Spiro, Mikey Pauker, Noah Aronson, Peri Smilow and Gerard Edery, all of whom have touched my life with their music and their spirits. My life-long friend Nick Weitzel visited my home and garden and I immediately realized that his collage art would be a great fit for the collaboration that represents this project. His vision of Sowing Seeds is on the cover and it is a gift I will always treasure. Thank you to a great friend Dave Nachmanoff for adding his phenomenal guitar playing to the tracks. Thanks to a few of my youth and teen choir singers who took time out of their summer to hang with me in the studio. You rock! Many thanks to my husband Andy and my kids, Emily and Louis, whose strength and love get me through. And to my brother Marc Lipco: It’s just you and me now bro. You’re the best.
Gardening is one of my great passions and as I was out there one day sowing seeds into the soil, I realized that writing music is much the same process. We plant small seeds and with a little care they grow to fruition, bringing sustenance and creating community. Music is my spiritual sustenance, and I hope that the songs in this collaborative effort will provide sustenance for those listen to it and are inspired by its intent: that with music, good friends, love, and a little perseverance, anything is possible.
